If you’ve been hurt in an accident of any kind, you should seek legal guidance as soon as possible. With an experienced personal injury attorney on your side, your odds of success increase drastically. But how do you choose the right attorney? The first step in this process is asking the right questions during your initial consultation. In this article, we examine five questions to ask before you retain a personal injury law firm.

“Have You Tried Cases Like Mine Before?”

When choosing an attorney, you should first ensure that the attorney you hire has experience trying cases like yours. In other words, just because an attorney practices personal injury law, it doesn’t mean that he or she has the experience necessary to successfully try your case. For example, if you were injured in a slip-and-fall accident, you wouldn’t want to hire a personal injury lawyer whose only experience is in auto accident cases.

“How Long Should My Case Take to Resolve?”

Next, you should ask your prospective attorney for an estimate of how long it will take to resolve your case. Every case is different, and there are several factors that can influence the length of your case, but the attorney you meet with should be able to give you an estimate based on past experience.

“Will My Case Go to Trial?

It’s no secret that most personal injury cases settle. However, certain cases do indeed make it all the way to trial. Therefore, you should ask your attorney what he or she believes the odds are that your case will go to trial. And if there is a good chance that your case will go to trial, you should make sure your attorney has a track record of success trying cases before a judge and jury.

“What is the Value of My Case?”

A good, experienced personal injury lawyer should be able to provide you with an accurate estimate of your case’s value. At the very least, he or she should provide you with an approximate range and explain how various factors can affect the value of your case.

“What is Your Fee?”

Although price isn’t the only thing you should consider when choosing an attorney, it’s certainly important. Therefore, you should have a clear understanding of an attorney’s fee arrangement before making a final decision regarding legal representation in your personal injury case. Some firms handle personal injury lawsuits on a contingency basis, and others have different fee systems in place.
