Falls are one of the most common types of accidents that cause serious injuries and death on construction sites. Construction employees often have to perform their work at great heights. Unfortunately, this increases the risk of serious accidents. New York has laws in place to protect construction workers, including those who work on scaffolding and other types of equipment that elevate them above the ground. In this article, we discuss what to do after a fall accident on a construction site in Long Island.

Obtain Medical Attention

After falling on a construction site, the first thing you should do is obtain medical attention. However, falls on construction sites can result in fractures, spinal cord injuries, and more, so it’s advisable to have a coworker or supervisor call 911 on your behalf to limit your movement after the accident. Depending on the severity of your injuries, you may be taken directly to the hospital following your injury. If not, however, you should schedule a visit with a doctor as soon as possible. In fact, you should do so even if you don’t believe you’ve been injured because some injuries don’t present symptoms until days or weeks after the initial accident.

Report the Fall to Your Employer

After obtaining medical care for your injuries, you should report your fall to your employer. To be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits, you must notify your employer of the accident no later than 30 days after its occurrence. In addition, providing notification to your employer will create a record of the accident and your resulting injuries, which can be helpful for both your workers’ compensation claim and any third-party claim you may file.

File a Workers’ Compensation Claim

Next, you should work with an attorney to file a workers’ compensation claim with the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board. You may file your claim by phone, online, or by mail. When filing your claim, you should include the following information:

  • Your name and your contact information
  • Your employer’s name and contact information
  • Your gross pay and frequency of pay
  • Your job duties
  • A description of the job site where your injury occurred
  • The extent and nature of your injury
