In Memoriam: David J. Dean

Dell & Dean, PLLC, honors the life and legacy of David J. Dean, a partner with the firm for two years and a distinguished trial lawyer whose decades-long career was defined by exceptional advocacy, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to justice.

Mr. Dean passed away on February 22, 2026. His work left a lasting impact on the legal profession and on the countless individuals he represented throughout his career.

A Career Defined by Landmark Litigation

David J. Dean was widely respected as one of New York’s accomplished trial lawyers, handling complex and challenging litigation involving medical malpractice, products liability, labor law, and serious personal injury claims.

Throughout his career, he led numerous high-profile cases and secured significant results for injured clients.

Among his most notable achievements was serving as Chief Trial Counsel for the plaintiffs in the Agent Orange Class Action, representing more than two million Vietnam veterans in their claims against several chemical companies. The scale and difficulty of the litigation made it one of the most consequential mass tort cases in American legal history. Despite the enormity of the case and the professional challenges that followed, Mr. Dean’s work was recognized in published federal court decisions as “extraordinary” and of “exceptional quality.”

Mr. Dean also demonstrated his formidable trial abilities in the civil litigation arising from the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, where he served as lead trial attorney in a landmark case that resulted in a verdict against the Port Authority for failing to take steps to prevent the attack.

Over the course of his career, Mr. Dean secured numerous significant verdicts and settlements in complex personal injury cases, reflecting both his skill in the courtroom and his commitment to advocating for individuals facing life-altering injuries.

Dedication to the Legal Profession

In addition to his courtroom accomplishments, Mr. Dean was a respected voice within the legal community. He frequently lectured at law schools and bar associations on trial practice and litigation strategy, drawing on decades of experience in complex litigation.

He was widely recognized by his peers as a leader in plaintiff’s trial law and was often described as a pioneer in the profession.

His Final Years at Dell & Dean

After more than 25 years practicing in Manhattan alongside Robert Sullivan, Mr. Dean joined Dell & Dean, PLLC, where he practiced alongside his son, named partner Christopher Dean, partner Joseph Dell, and his grandson, Jeffrey. He served as a partner with the firm for the final two years of his career.

David J. Dean’s influence extends far beyond the cases he tried. His legacy lives on in the lawyers he mentored, the clients he fought for, and the example he set through decades of perseverance and commitment to justice.
